Can Destiny (Prarabdh Karma) Be Changed? — A Deep Insight from Kabir Sahib’s Teachings

One of the most profound questions in human life is: Can destiny be changed? Are the सुख (happiness) and दुःख (suffering) we experience already written, or is there a way to alter them? The spiritual knowledge of Kabir Sahib provides a clear and powerful answer to this question.

Understanding the Types of Karma

According to spiritual wisdom, a soul carries three kinds of karmas:

  • Sanchit Karma – the accumulated karmas from past births
  • Prarabdh Karma – the portion of those karmas that must be experienced in this present life (destiny)
  • Kriyaman Karma – the actions we are currently performing, shaping our future

Among these, Prarabdh Karma is generally considered unchangeable, as it is already set to be experienced in this lifetime.

Is Destiny Truly Unchangeable?

Kabir Sahib explains that under normal circumstances, destiny cannot be altered:

“Masa ghatai na til badhai, vidhna likhe jo lekh.” Not even a fraction can be reduced or increased from what is written in destiny.

He further states:

“Karm rekh tari na tare.” The line of karma cannot be erased by ordinary means.

This means that no matter how much effort one makes through worldly methods, rituals, or calculations, the results of karmas must be experienced.

The Example of Rama, Sita, and Vashistha

Kabir Sahib illustrates this truth through a well-known example.

The sage Vashistha, regarded as a Trikaaldarshi (one who knows past, present, and future), was the royal guru of King Dasharatha. He carefully selected an auspicious time for the marriage of Rama and Sita, even postponing it by three days to ensure a perfect muhurat for a happy married life.

Yet, what followed?

  • Immediately after marriage, Rama, Sita, and Lakshman were sent into exile
  • Sita was abducted in the forest
  • Rama wandered in grief searching for her
  • King Dasharatha died in sorrow due to separation from his son

This clearly shows that even the most auspicious timing and spiritual calculations could not alter destiny.

What Is the True Solution?

Kabir Sahib does not leave us without hope. He reveals a higher spiritual truth:

“Kabir, jab hi Satnam hriday dharyo, bhayo paap ko naash. Jaise chingi agni ki, padai puranai ghaas.”

When Satnam (the true divine name) is established in the heart through true devotion, sins are destroyed instantly—just like dry grass burns to ashes with a spark.

He further says:

“Sachcha Satguru meti kar, upar maarai mekh.” The true Satguru erases the karmic record completely and seals it permanently.

The Role of the True Satguru

Kabir Sahib emphasizes that only a complete and true Satguru has the power to liberate a soul from karmic bondage:

“Kabir, karm faans chhoote nahi, keto karo upaay. Sadguru mile to ubarai, nahi to pralaya jaay.”

No matter how many efforts one makes, the noose of karma cannot be removed. Only upon meeting a true Satguru can one escape; otherwise, the soul remains trapped in the cycle of birth and death.

He also declares:

“Jam jora jaa se daren, mite karm ke lekh.” Even the forces of death fear the one whose karmas are erased by the true Satguru.

Final Conclusion

The essence of this spiritual knowledge is:

  • Destiny (Prarabdh Karma) cannot be changed by ordinary means
  • Every individual must experience the results of their karmas
  • Rituals, astrology, or favorable timings cannot override karmic destiny
  • Only the refuge of a true Satguru and the practice of true devotion (Satbhakti) can destroy karmas
  • Through Satnam, both accumulated and destiny-bound karmas can be eliminated

Therefore, the ultimate goal of human life is not merely to seek temporary relief from suffering, but to find a true Satguru, receive true spiritual knowledge, and practice genuine devotion to attain liberation (moksha).
