What is the Kabir Panth and who are Kabir Panthis?

What is Kabir Panth?

Kabir Panth is the spiritual path of Bhakti founded by God Kabir. God Kabir manifested on Earth in 1398 CE and lived for 120 years, departing to his eternal home, Satlok, in 1518 CE. His teachings focus on true devotion and worship, which were recorded by his disciple, Dharamdas, in the scripture Kabir Sagar. This scripture provides insights into the creation of the universe, the reason behind souls being trapped on Earth, and the causes of their suffering. Kabir also revealed the path of salvation to reach Satlok, the eternal abode.

Who are Kabir Panthis?

The followers of Kabir Panth are called Kabir Panthis, with various sects existing throughout India. Notable ones include those in Damakheda and Varanasi. While God Kabir appeared in Varanasi, he did not establish any sect there. The sect in Damakheda, however, was founded by Dharamdas, the first guru being Churamani (son of Dharmdas) who received blessing and initiation from God Kabir to start it. Yet, Kabir had forewarned that this sect would eventually become corrupted and fail to provide true worship. As a result, the initiation and worship practices from the Damakheda gurus would be ineffective for attaining true spiritual enlightenment.
